Crochet Book Review
Do you have a collection of crochet books? I have slowly been building up my own little library of crochet resources. Having a variety of books on hand can definitely spark some inspiration when you need a bit of a creative push. We’ve all been there…wanting to crochet but not having an idea what to make. Motifs to the rescue!
Beyond the Square: Crochet Motifs by Edie Eckman has been a wonderful book to have on my shelf and I’ve recommended it to other crocheters. Let me share why you should add this book to your own collection.
There are a ton of positive things to say about this book. It is packed full with 144 motif patterns ranging from circles to squares to triangles and other fun shapes. The patterns are presented so beautifully and in such a way that no matter how you read patterns, you’ll be able to start and complete each motif in no time. Each pattern includes a photo of the finished motif as well as both written instructions and chart forms. They are easy to follow along with and understand which is always encouraging for beginners or those that need a crochet refresher.
The book begins with a lovely “Quick-Start Guide” that covers things like yarn, basic measurements, sizing and gauge, tips for beginners and explanation of vocabulary. I won’t give away all that the introduction entails but trust me, Edie’s got your covered!
The nice thing about motifs is that they are a quick make and can be used in so many different ways. And, because this book is so awesome, you’re also provided with a generous number of ideas on ways you could use the motifs you create. I like to use them as patches and as cute little decor pieces around my house to keep my plant pots from scratching my tables. If you’d like to spruce up your finished motifs, there’s even a section about edging and adding cute little enhancements.
If you’d like to join your motifs together to create a larger piece, there is a page with arrangement suggestions too! I told you this book was packed full of goodies! Did I mention a mini basic stitch guide too?
If you haven’t guessed…I love this book. I’m sure you would love it too! Check out a few of my own creations from the patterns included:
This is one book that you should definitely add to your collections. Edie Eckman also has a few other crochet books that I’ll be adding to my list to buy in the future. Wonderfully laid out and written, they are sure to be keepers!
