This square motif is a great little project. It’s perfect for when you have that itch to make something but don’t know what. A small project is always a great way to get motivated when need a push to get back into the crafty zone. It also is a nice project for scrap yarn or little left over balls from other projects.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms.
– This pattern involves colour changing. You may use your preferred method to switch colours as long as the stitch count remains the same.
– Beginning chain when used counts as a stitch.
– This motif may pull in slightly. Depending on your tension or yarn used, it might be beneficial to complete a quick blocking to straighten out the edges to give it a more finished appearance.

Materials Needed:
– 5mm hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– 2 colours of worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn. Will be referred to as “Colour A” and “Colour B”

Terms:
MR- Magic ring
SS – Slip stitch
Ch – Chain
SC – Single crochet
HDC – Half double crochet
DC – Double crochet
PS –Puff stitch
FPSC – Front post single crochet
P – Picot

Special Stitch Tutorials:

Puff Stitch – Yarn over. Insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop. Yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all loops on hook. Ch 1 to close the stitch.

Picot – Chain 3. Insert hook into 3rd chain from hook. Yarn over and pull yarn through the stitch and loop on your hook.

Pattern:
With colour A, begin with a MR and ch 1.

Round 1:
Create 2 PS and ch 2. Repeat this pattern 3 more times until you have completed a total of 8 ps. After completing your last ch 2, SS into first ps. Fasten off.

Round 2:
Corner #1: With yarn colour B, chain 2 into any chain 2 space of the previous round. Complete 2 dc in the same space. This is the beginning of defining your corners. Make 1 ps in between the next two ps of the previous round.

Corner #2: Place 3 dc, 2 chain and 3 dc into the next chain space.
Make 1 ps in between the next 2 ps of the previous round.

Corner #3: Place 3 dc, 2 chain and 3 dc into the next chain space.
Make 1 ps in between the next 2 ps of the previous round.

Corner #4: Place 3 dc, 2 chain and 3 dc into the next chain space.
Make 1 ps in between the next 2 ps of the previous round.

In the next ch space, place 3 dc and 2 ch to complete your beginning corner. SS into the top of your beginning ch. Fasten off.

Round 3:
Corner #1: With yarn colour A, insert your hook into any corner space and ch 1. Still in that space, create 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.

Ch 2 and skip over the dc cluster from the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the ps of the previous round. Ch 2.

Corner #2: In the next corner space, create 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.

Ch 2 and skip over the dc cluster from the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the ps of the previous round. Ch 2.

Corner #3: In the next corner space, create 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.

Ch 2 and skip over the dc cluster from the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the ps of the previous round. Ch 2.

Corner #4: In the next corner space, create 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.

Ch 2 and skip over the dc cluster from the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the ps of the previous round. Ch 2. SS into the beginning ch 1 of corner #1 and fasten off.

Round 4:
Corner #1: With yarn colour B, choose a dc stitch in any corner to begin. In the top of that stitch, place 1 sc, 1 p, 1 sc.

Ch 2. Place 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the front post stitch of the previous round. Make 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round and Ch 2.

Corner #2: Place 1 sc, 1 p, 1 sc into the top of the dc stitch of the previous round.

Ch 2. Place 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the front post stitch of the previous round. Make 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round and Ch 2.

Corner #3: Place 1 sc, 1 p, 1 sc into the top of the dc stitch of the previous round.

Ch 2. Place 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the front post stitch of the previous round. Make 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round and Ch 2.

Corner #4: Place 1 sc, 1 p, 1 sc into the top of the dc stitch of the previous round.

Ch 2. Place 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round. Complete 1 fpsc around the front post stitch of the previous round. Make 3 sc into the chain space of the previous round and Ch 2.

You should now be back at the corner where you started the round. Ss into beginning sc and fasten off. Weave in all ends.
