Continuing with my pattern write ups, today I’m chatting with you about my crochet design, The Colourway Cowl. You’ll find the pattern below. I think revisiting it now is a great time because the fall weather is definitely upon us and there have been a few days where I even dug out my winter jacket for my morning errands. One feeling I really can’t stand is having cold, chilly air on my neck so it’s pretty common for me to have a variety of scarves and cowls hanging around my house. You can start to see where my inspiration for this pattern is coming from!

If you’ve read some of my previous posts, you’ll notice that I have a deep love for Caron x Pantone yarn. While it is a beautiful and lovely yarn to use, sometimes finding the right pattern for that particular yarn can be hard to come by. Some require more than one braid and I was really interested in creating a project that was fast, simple and only required one braid. Combine that with my love of cozy accessories, The Colourway Cowl was created.

I designed this cowl to be a “one size” piece. It will fit a child loosely and an adult more snug. The pattern is worked up with a fairly loose tension so if your tension is naturally tight, it will change the size and potentially make it too small. The pattern is written up using the original Caron x Pantone yarn and has been worked up based on the yardage included in the braid as well as taking into account the weight of the yarn. The first section and colour will include your beginning chain and will not leave more than 2-3 inches of yarn upon completion of this section. This is approximate based on your tension of course. A tighter starting chain vs. a looser starting chain. The remaining sections will have more of a yarn tail to work with for tying off and weaving in ends.

To create an appealing and interesting texture, alternating stitches of front and back post crochet are used between simple double crochet rows. By keeping the count and stitches simple and the size of the project small, this piece is easily portable and also works up in about an hour. I think the simplicity of it also really allows the front and back post stitches to really stand out and create a lovely textured appearance.

I’ve been really blown away by the positive reception that this pattern has had since I originally shared it back in August of this year. A few people have created their own Colourway Cowl and shared them on Instagram which has been really amazing. The Colourway Cowl

Notes:
– This is a one size cowl. It will fit a child loosely and an adult more snug. It’s fairly stretchy which allows for a comfortable fit across a broad range of sizes. Please note that the pattern should be worked up with a loose tension. A tighter tension will change the size the cowl with the chance of it being too small for an adult.
– This pattern is made using the original Caron x Pantone yarn and has been worked up based on the yardage and yarn weight included in the set. It is important to note that the first colour will include your beginning chain and will not leave more than 2-3 inches of yarn upon completion of this section. This is approximate based on your tension.  The remaining coloured sections will have more of a yarn tail to work with for tying off and weaving in.
– The beginning chain of each round does not count as a stitch.
– This pattern uses back post double crochet and front post double crochet.
– You may use your preferred method for colour changing so long as the stitch count matches the pattern.

Materials Needed:
– 1 braid of original Caron x Pantone yarn in the colourway of your choosing
– 6mm crochet hook
– yarn needle
– scissors

Terms:
ch – chain
ss – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
bpdc – back post double crochet

Pattern:
With your first colour, using fairly loose tension, chain 60. Being careful not to twist your chain, slip stitch the ends together to form a circle.

Round 1:
Ch. 2. 1 dc in each stitch around. SS into first dc of the round. (60)

Round 2:
Ch 2. In the first stitch, complete one fpdc. In the next stitch, complete one bpdc. Continue alternating (fpdc/bpdc) all the way around finishing with a ss into the first fpdc of the round. (60)

Round 3:
Ch. 1. 1 sc into each stitch around. Ss into first sc of the round. (60)

*Remember this is the shortest yarn tail of the pattern. If you find you need a little bit more, try pulling out a few of the last sc stitches and redoing them with a slightly tighter tension.*

Change to the next colour in the colourway

Round 4:
Ch. 2. 1 dc in each stitch around. SS into first dc of the round. (60)

Round 5:
Ch. 2. In the first stitch, complete one fpdc. In the next stitch, complete one bpdc. Continue alternating (fpdc/bpdc) all the way around finishing with a ss into the first fpdc of the round. (60)

Round 6:
Ch. 1. 1 sc into each stitch around. Ss into first sc of the round. (60)

Change to the next colour in the colourway

Round 7:
Ch. 2. 1 dc in each stitch around. SS into first dc of the round. (60)

Round 8:
Ch 2. In the first stitch, complete one fpdc. In the next stitch, complete one bpdc. Continue alternating (fpdc/bpdc) all the way around finishing with a ss into the first fpdc of the round. (60)

Round 9:
Ch. 1. 1 sc into each stitch around. Ss into first sc of the round. (60)

Change to the next colour in the colourway

Round 10:
Ch. 2. 1 dc in each stitch around. SS into first dc of the round. (60)

Round 11:
Ch 2. In the first stitch, complete one fpdc. In the next stitch, complete one bpdc. Continue alternating (fpdc/bpdc) all the way around finishing with a ss into the first fpdc of the round. (60)

Round 12:
Ch. 1. 1 sc into each stitch around. Ss into first sc of the round. (60)

Change to the next colour in the colourway

Round 13:
Ch. 2. 1 dc in each stitch around. SS into first dc of the round. (60)

Round 14:
Ch 2. In the first stitch, complete one fpdc. In the next stitch, complete one bpdc. Continue alternating (fpdc/bpdc) all the way around finishing with a ss into the first fpdc of the round. (60)

Round 15:
Ch. 1. 1 sc into each stitch around. Ss into first sc of the round. (60)

Fasten off and weave in all ends
