Yarnspirations 1 Pound Mystery Bag (Part 1)

On Boxing Day, I was browsing around for some deals on all things crafty and found an intriguing idea of a “mystery yarn bag”. I know I’m a little late to the game for this one but I’m not normally a risk taker so I never gave much research into what these bags entail, as you don’t know what you will receive. I thought it would be fun to take a leap and perhaps make it a challenge for myself to see what creations I can make with the yarn I’d be given.

I ordered my bag for $11.97 from Walmart Canada but I know most people who have purchased these do so through the Yarnspirations website. If you order from Walmart Canada, you’ll see that the packaging in the photo has the Yarnspirations logo but the supplier is Spinrite. For those that might be unaware, Spinrite is the company that manufactures many specific brands of craft yarn that you will recognize from the Yarnspirations line.

For one pound of yarn, I felt that taking a chance and paying the $11.97 was a pretty good option. I have heard that it can be a “luck of the draw” kind of deal and some people have not been completely thrilled with what they were given. I’ve also seen some comments and photos of people who were thrilled and able to create some really beautiful blankets and accessories. Perhaps it comes down to a matter of opinion and personal preference as to how you’ll interpret the mystery yarn; whether it’s something you’re used to working with or if they are skeins that you don’t use frequently or haven’t tried at all. I do like a crafty challenge so I’m rather excited to see what I will receive.

What do you get in the mystery bag? For starters, you get 1 pound of yarn which to me sounds like a sweet deal. All the yarn you receive in each bag is the same colour and weight however each bag is randomly picked so there is no guarantee that you’ll get the same yarn if you order multiple bags. That being said, I think most people welcome the variety upon ordering more than one mystery bag. A few people mentioned they received one bag of mixed weight yarn so perhaps that’s a possibility as well.

The yarn included in these bags is listed as being mill ends. That means the yarn are the ends of a lot (or odd lots) which could be a little off shade, slightly defective, perhaps have a knot and usually are not labeled with colour, dye lots or yardage information. But don’t let that scare you. The fiber content is usually always listed and the amount of yarn you get with mill ends is usually more than enough for hats, scarves or if you order a 1 pound bag like the one I did, maybe a small baby blanket. You could potentially even set it aside and use it as accent colours with other yarn if you can pair it up with something similar. I did some research and quite a few people commented that they have never run into a knot with these 1 pound mystery bags and the quality is very nice so that is promising! Even so, a knot is generally a minor inconvenience that can usually be fixed and worked into your project very easily.

For $11.97 this mystery bag sounds like a great way to add to my stash and build up my collection of yarn for future projects. I can’t wait for it to arrive so I can dig in and see what I was given. Perhaps it will be a colour or weight I don’t use often and might encourage me to think outside the box on ways to use it. Either way, I’m looking forward to the surprise.

Be sure to check back here for a new post when it arrives. I’m excited to share it with you!
