Holiday Hexie Centrepiece – Free Pattern

15Shares

I love to crochet hexagons. Like a granny square, they are versatile, can easy be customized and they’re fun to make. Hexies are also a great stash buster project because when it’s small, each round uses very little yarn.

Today I’m showing you how to turn your hexie’s into a simple and fun centrepiece to suit any occasion. Mine is Christmas themed but you could easily change the colours to suit a specific holiday, season or celebration. Find the free crochet pattern below…

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– The colours in this design can be easily altered to suit any holiday or occasion

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, begin by making a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the 1st CH to form a loop.

Round 1:
CH 2 and make 1 DC into your circle. *CH 2, 2 DC*. Repeat from * to * 4 more times. CH 2 and SS into the top of your beginning CH 2. Fasten off.

(12 DC stitches, 6 CH 2 spaces)

Round 2:
Join yarn colour B into any CH 2 space with a SS and CH 2. *Place 1 DC into each of the next two stitches. Into the next CH space, place 1 DC, CH 1, 1 DC.* Repeat from * to * 4 more times. Place 1 DC into each of the next two stitches. Into the next CH space, make 1 DC, CH 2. SS into the top of the beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(24 DC stitches, 6 CH 2 spaces)

Round 3:
Join yarn colour C into any CH space with a SS and CH 2. *Place 1 DC into the next 4 stitches. In the next CH space, make 1 DC, CH 2, 1 DC.* Repeat from * to * 4 more times. Make 1 DC into the next 4 stitches.
Make 1 DC into the next CH space. CH 2 and SS into the top of your beginning CH 2.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

(36 DC stitches, 6 CH 2 spaces)

Stitch your hexies together in the layout seen below using your preferred joining method. I like to use the “invisible seam” method but please use the method you are most comfortable and familiar with.

If you don’t want a border, your hexie centerpiece is complete.

If you would like to add a border:
Join yarn colour B into any stitch and CH 1. Follow along your edges and make a SC into each stitch.
– When you reach the points/tips, place 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into the chain space.
– When you reach the dips, create 1 SC in into the first CH space, 1 SC into the seam and 1 SC into the next chain space.
Continue with your SC stitches along the edges. When you get back to the beginning, SS into your beginning Ch 1. Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
