The back stitch is a common feature found in embroidery and sewing. It’s also very simple to use within crochet projects and can create a beautiful effect and add embellishment to your patterns. Today I’m sharing a tutorial on how to use this stitch within your crochet and provide some examples on how it could be used.

For this tutorial, I created a small swatch with double crochet stitches using worsted weight acrylic yarn. For the back stitch portion, I also used worsted weight acrylic but you could use anything from embroidery thread to a bulky yarn depending on the effect that you’re going for. I also had a pair of scissors and appropriate sized needle for sewing the back stitch into the project.

If you’d like to follow along with your own materials, crochet a small swatch. Thread your needle with the fibre of your choosing for sewing and let’s begin together.

And that is how to create a simple back stitch within your crochet projects. Here are some ideas where you could use this stitch as an accent or embellishment:

– Create thin rows in a complimenting colour, stitching into a crochet scarf, hat or neck warmer.
– Use them in coasters around the edging.
– Add rows to throw pillows or blankets.
– Use them to decorate baskets, flower pot covers or other home decor projects.
– Amigurumi or ornaments.
