Half Double Crochet Pouch – Free Crochet Pattern

How cute are these drawstring pouches? It’s beginner friendly and perfect for storing craft notions, trinkets and game pieces (just to name a few ideas). You can use your favourite worsted weight yarn in either one colour or two to add a personalized touch.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Finished bag measures approx. 7 ½ inches tall and 6 inches wide when lying flat
– Beginning CH 1 does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern except for round 17
– For the drawstring, you might choose to use a different colour for a fun accent

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 82 yards of worsted weight yarn. I used Mary Maxim Glimmer in the “Lavender” and “Dark Purple” colourways
– 5mm hook (Check out the hooks available at Mary Maxim)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
HDC – Half Double Crochet


Pattern:
Begin with a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the first CH to form a loop.

Round 1: (Creating the base)
CH 1 and place 10 HDC into the loop. SS into the top of your beginning HDC.

(10 HDC stitches)

Round 2:
CH 1 and into each stitch around, place 2 HDC. SS into the top of your beginning HDC.

(20 HDC stitches)

Round 3:
CH 1 and into the first stitch, place 1 HDC. Into the next stitch place 2 HDC. *Place 1 HDC into the next stitch and 2 HDC in the following stitch*. Repeat from * to * 8 more times. SS into the top of the beginning HDC.

(30 HDC stitches)

Round 4:
CH 1 and into each of the first two stitches, place 1 HDC. Into the next stitch, place 2 HDC. *In the next two stitches, place 1 HDC. Make 2 HDC in the following stitch*. Repeat from * to * 8 more times. SS into the top of the beginning HDC.

(40 HDC stitches)

Rounds 5-16:
CH 1 and into the first stitch and each stitch around, place 1 HDC. SS into the first HDC.

Round 17: (Drawstring spaces, see photo A)
CH 2 (represents 1 HDC, CH 1), SK 1 stitch. *Place 1 HDC in the following stitch, CH 1 and SK the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * 18 more times. SS into the 1st CH of the beginning CH 2.

(20 HDC stitches, 20 CH 1 stitches = 40 stitches)

Round 18:
CH 1 and into the first stitch and each CH space around, place 1 HDC. SS into the top of the beginning HDC.

(40 HDC stitches)

Round 19:
CH 1 and into the first stitch and each stitch around, place 1 HDC. SS into the top of the beginning HDC. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

(40 HDC stitches)

Drawstring:
Crochet a chain approximately 26 inches long (length can be adjusted based on your preference). Into the 2nd CH from your hook and each CH across, place 1 SS. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Weave your drawstring in and out of the CH 1 spaces from round 17 (photo B). Even out the ends at the front. Tighten your bag by holding the top and gently pull both ends of the drawstring. Tie to fasten.
