
The Sunny Day Motif is back with a new and refreshing update! Originally published in June 2020, you’ll find an updated layout, new photos and a slight adjustment to the instructions to make it flow a little more smoothly.
This motif works up so beautifully using three colours but as there are seven rounds, you could easily change colours for each for an extra pop. Find the free crochet pattern below…

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– The finished motif measures approximately 4 ½ inches in diameter
– Gauge is not important for this pattern.
– Refer to the notes within each round for details on the beginning CH counting as a stitch
– In rounds 4 and 6, the grouping of stitches in each CH space will be referred to as a cluster
– Ideas for use: coasters, placed under vases/plant pots to protect surfaces, attached to a ribbon or chain to make a decorative garland or mounted in an embroidery hoop for a home decor piece
Materials Needed:
– Worsted weight cotton yarn in 3 colours. I used WeCrochet Dishie (approx. 6 yards for colour A “Blush”, 4 yards for colour B “Begonia”, and 10 yards for colour C “Silver”)
– 4mm hook (I used my Dots hook)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
Stitches:
CH – Chain
SK – Skip Stitch
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Stitch
DC – Double Crochet
TR – Triple/Treble Crochet

Pattern:
With colour A, begin with a magic circle or CH 3 and SS into the 2nd CH to form a loop.
Round 1:
CH 3 (represents 1 DC, CH 1). Into the circle, *make 1 DC, CH 1*. Repeat from * to * 8 more times. SS into the 2nd CH of the beginning CH 3. Fasten off and tighten the centre of the loop.
(10 DC stitches, 10 CH 1 spaces)

Round 2:
With yarn colour B, begin in any CH space with a SS, CH 2 (represents 1 SC, CH 1). Into the same space, make 1 SC. Into the next CH space and each CH space around, make 1 SC, CH 1, 1 SC. SS into the 1st CH of the beginning CH 2. Fasten off.
(20 SC stitches, 10 CH 1 spaces)

Round 3:
With yarn colour C, begin in any CH space with a SS, CH 5 (represents 1 SC, CH 4). Into the next CH space and each CH space around, make 1 SC, CH 4. SS into the 1st CH of the beginning CH 5. Fasten off.
(10 SC stitches, 10 CH 4 spaces)

Round 4:
With yarn colour A, begin in any CH space with a SS, CH 1 (represents 1 SC). Into the same space, make 4 SC. Into the next CH space and each CH space around, make 5 SC. SS into the beginning CH 1. Fasten off.
(50 SC stitches = 10 clusters)


Round 5:
With yarn colour B, begin in any 3rd SC within a cluster with a SS and CH 6 (represents 1 SC, CH 5). *SK the next 4 SC and place 1 SC into the next stitch, CH 5*. Repeat from * to * 8 more times. SS into the 1st CH of the beginning CH 6. Fasten off.
(10 SC stitches, 10 CH 5 spaces)

Round 6:
With yarn colour C, begin in any CH space with a SS, CH 1 (represents 1 SC). Into the same space, make 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC. Into the next CH space and each CH space around, make 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 TR, 1 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC. SS into the top of the beginning CH 1. Fasten off.
(10 clusters)

Round 7:
With yarn colour A, begin in the back loop of any TR stitch with SS. Make 1 SS into the back loop of the each stitch around. Place 1 SS into each space between clusters (between the last SC of a cluster and first SC of the next cluster). SS into the beginning SS. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
