13Shares

Say hello to the Happy Gatherings Placemat pattern. This design is the third in my Happy Gatherings collection which also features a coaster set and a lovely table runner. Made with worsted weight cotton yarn, this is a simple yet beautifully textured piece that would be a beautiful touch to your table setting.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is 4 x 4 inches. Pattern for gauge: CH 17. Into the 2nd CH from hook, and each CH across place 1 DC. CH 2 and turn. Place 1 DC into each stitch across, CH 2 and turn (for a total of 9 rows, each containing 16 DC stitches)
– Turning chains 1 and 2 do not count as a stitch
– A trick for neater edges is to replace the turning CH 2 with a turning CH 1. You might also try eliminating the turning CH altogether. This is simply preference and not at all required for the pattern
– Project measures approximately 10 x 14 inches
– Edging is optional

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 147 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. I used WeCrochet Dishie in the “Silver” colourway
– 4mm hook (I used the hook from my cute Dots set)
Yarn needle
Scissors
Measuring tape

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SK – Skip stitch
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Crossed Double Crochet Stitch –
For this pattern, skip two stitches and make one DC in the next stitch. Continue by placing 1 DC within the second skipped stitch. This will create an “X” effect/criss-cross appearance with the first DC in the back and the second DC in the front.

Pattern:
CH 60

Row 1:
Into the 2nd CH from your hook and each CH across, place 1 SC. CH 2 and turn.

(59 SC stitches)

Rows 2-22:
Into each of the first 20 stitches, place 1 DC. *CH 1, SK two stitches and place 1 DC into the next stitch. Place 1 DC into the 2nd skipped stitch.* Repeat from * to * five more times. CH 1, SK 1 stitch. Place 1 DC into each of the next 20 stitches. CH 2 and turn.

(40 DC stitches, 6 Crossed DC segments, 7 CH 1 stitches = 59 stitches)

Row 23: (Crochet into the CH 1 stitches, not the CH 1 space from the previous row)
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 SC. Fasten off and weave in ends.

(59 SC stitches)

Edging:
Edging is not required however if you would like to add one, join yarn into any stitch with a SS, CH 1 and evenly place 1 SC into each stitch around all edges. Into each corner space, make 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC to create a curve around to the next edge. SS into the top of the beginning CH 1 and fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Great job! Your Happy Gatherings Placemat is complete! Make this project in any colour to compliment the season or celebration. Don’t forget to check out the other two designs featured in this collection:
