I’m really excited to share the Curio Collector Set with you. Meant for all things whimsical, magical or simply whatever brings you joy, this set includes two patterns to help keep your tiny treasures close at hand. Stash your items in the soft pouch and use the mat to display, organize or sort your precious finds.
(yes, I am aware that the mat in the photo was photographed upside down…that’s what happens when you’re working on content with kids and cats trying to help. It still works and looks cute though!)

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– The completed pouch measures approximately 5 inches long and 4 inches wide when closed
– The completed mat measures approximately 5 ½ x 5 ½ inches
– Please look for the notes within the pattern indicating when the beginning stitches count as a stitch
– This pattern contains instructions and yardage information for one pouch and one mat
– Use this pouch to store your magical finds and enchanting discoveries. Shells, sea glass, gemstones and crystals. The included mat allows you to place your items on a soft surface for sorting, organizing or admiring
Materials Needed:
– #3 light/DK yarn. I used Lion Brand Coboo in the Tan and Mauve colourways
– Yardage amounts are as follows: pouch (49 yards), mat (30 yards for colour A, 2 ½ yards for colour B)
– 4mm hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– A stitch marker if you’d like to mark the first stitches of each around
Stitches:
CH – Chain
SK – Skip stitch
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
EXT/SC – Extended Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
Special Stitch Tutorial:
Extended Single Crochet (EXT/SC) – Insert your hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull back through the stitch (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull your hook down through the top loop on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull down through two loops on hook. Detailed Tutorial: Click here
Pouch Pattern:
In the colour of your choosing, begin with a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the 2nd CH to make a circle.
Round 1:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch) and place 6 SC into the circle. SS into the top of the first SC.
(6 SC stitches)
Round 2:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch) and place 2 SC into each stitch around. SS into the top of the first SC.
(12 SC stitches)
Round 3:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch). Into the first stitch, *place 1 SC followed by 2 SC in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * 5 more times. SS into the top of the first SC.
(18 SC stitches)
Round 4:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch). *Into each of the next two stitches, place 1 SC. Place 2 SC in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * 5 more times. SS into the top of the first SC.
(24 SC stitches)
Round 5:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch). *Into each of the next 3 stitches, place 1 SC. Place 2 SC in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * 5 more times. SS into the top of the first SC.
(30 SC stitches)
Round 6:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch). *Into each of the next 4 stitches, place 1 SC. Place 2 SC in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * 5 more times. SS into the top of the first SC.
(36 SC stitches)
Rounds 7-16:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch). Into the first stitch and each stitch around, place 1 EXT/SC. SS into the top of the first EXT/SC.
(36 EXT/SC stitches)
Round 17:
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC, CH 1). SK 1 stitch and place 1 DC in the next stitch (Photo A). *Place 1 DC, CH 1 and SK 1 stitch.* Repeat from * to * 16 more times. SS into the 2nd CH of the beginning CH 3.
(18 DC stitches, 18 CH 1 = 36 stitches)
Round 18:
CH 2 (does not count as a stitch). Into the first stitch and each CH space around, place 1 DC. SS into the top of the first DC.
(36 DC stitches)
Round 19:
CH 4 (counts as 1 SS, CH 3). *Into the next stitch, place 1 SS and CH 3.* Repeat from * to * 34 more times. SS into the first CH of the beginning CH 4. Fasten off, tight the centre loop and weave in all ends.
(36 SS, 36 CH 3 spaces)
Drawstring
You might choose to make a longer or shorter drawstring depending on your preference. You might also prefer to use a ribbon instead.
CH 80. Into the 2nd CH and each CH across, place 1 SS. Fasten off and trim the excess yarn tails.
At the front of the pouch, begin to weave your drawstring in and out of the DC posts from round 17. Even out the drawstring so that both ends are equal length (photo B). You should now be able to gently pull the drawstring, closing the top of the pouch and securing with a knot or bow (photo C).
Mat Pattern:
With yarn colour A, CH 20 and begin row 1 in the 2nd CH from your hook.
Rows 1-16:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 EXT/SC. CH 1 and turn for all rows except after completing row 16. Fasten off instead.
(19 EXT/SC stitches)
Mat Edging:
Join yarn colour B into the top of any stitch from row 16 with a SS, CH 1 (counts as 1 SC). Evenly place 1 SC around all edges, working 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into each corner space. You will be crocheting into the sides of the EXT/SC stitches for two of the edges (photo D). After the edging is complete, SS into the top of the beginning CH 1 and fasten off.
Join yarn colour A into any SC stitch with a SS and CH 1. Into each stitch around the mat, place 1 SS, CH 1. Into each corner space, place 1 SS, CH 2, 1 SS. SS into the beginning SS, fasten off and weave in all ends.
