V Stitch Plant Pot Cozy – Free Crochet Pattern

28Shares

Are you ready for another fun and free crochet pattern? It’s getting to be warm and humid here in Ontario and typically in the warmer weather, I like to work on small projects. Things I can crochet while on a road trip, sitting on the deck or at the campsite. This plant pot cozy pattern is really great for travelling with and you can personalize by using one shade of yarn or multiple colours.

This would be a really cute teacher gift, adding this over a small plant pot with a little thank you note tied to the top. It doesn’t take much time and adding a handmade touch always adds something special.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Finished cozy fits a plant pot that measures approximately 5 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. The cozy can be increased in height by adding more rounds. Please note this will increase the yardage required
– Beginning CH 2 counts as a stitch throughout
– Special stitch tutorial is included in the pattern

Materials Needed:
–  Worsted weight yarn (cotton or acrylic) in 3 colours. I used Mary Maxim Glimmer in “Dark Purple” (colour A, approx. 29 yards), “Mushroom” (colour B, approx. 22 yards) and “Lavender” (colour C, approx. 22 yards)
– 5mm hook (I used an adorable hook from my WeCrochet Dots hook set)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors (these are my favourite!)
– Measuring tape (check out this handy retractable one)
– Stitch marker (can be helpful to mark the 2nd CH of your beginning CH 2)

Stitches:
SK – Skip Stitch
SS – Slip Stitch
CH – Chain
DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Double Crochet V Stitch –
For this pattern, the V stitch is made by placing 2 DC, together into one stitch (round 4). For round 5 and up, the 2 DC will be placed between the previous 2 DC stitches, separating them into a “V” shape, referred to as the “V stitch space”. Please see photo below for an example:

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, begin with a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the first CH to form a loop.

Round 1:
CH 2 (counts as 1 DC) and place 9 DC into your circle. SS into the second CH of the beginning CH 2.

(10 DC stitches)

Round 2:
CH 2 (counts as 1 DC) and place 1 DC into the same stitch. Into each stitch around, place 2 DC. SS into the second CH of the beginning CH 2.

(20 DC stitches)

Round 3:
CH 2 (counts as 1 DC) and place 1 DC into the same stitch. Into each stitch around, place 2 DC. SS into the second CH of the beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(40 DC stitches)

Round 4: (V stitch section begins here and will be used for the remainder of the pattern)
Join yarn colour B into the top of any stitch with a SS and CH 2 (counts as 1 DC). Place 1 DC into the same stitch and SK the next stitch. *Into the following stitch, place 2 DC and SK the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * 18 more times. SS into the second CH of the beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(20 V stitches, each containing 2 DC)

Round 5:
Join yarn colour C into any V stitch space with a SS and CH 2 (counts as 1 DC). Place 1 more DC into the same space. SK the next 2 DC stitches and *place 2 DC into the next V stitch space. SK the next 2 DC stitches*. Repeat from * to * 18 more times. SS into the second CH of the beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(20 V stitches, each containing 2 DC)

Rounds 6-12:
Repeat round 5, alternating colours after completing each round.
