Crochet washcloths are a classic and traditional project that can be found in many homes. They’re durable, wash up well and add a special handmade touch to your space. The Sweet Suzy Washcloth uses a simple combination of the suzette stitch and back loop single crochet to create a lovely and textured design. They look wonderful in bright bold colours or calm soft shades.

As of February 2nd 2022, this pattern has received an update to be consistent with the layout and formats of my recent designs. The updated .pdf can also be found in my Etsy and Ravelry shops.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch tutorial here)
– A special stitch tutorial is included within the pattern. For more detailed instructions with photos, please follow the link provided
– Edging is optional. Instructions for fastening off when appropriate will be will be explained after completing row 29
– Gauge is not important for this pattern. Using the materials mentioned below, the finished washcloth measures approximately 9 inches x 9 inches

Materials Needed:
– Approximately 85 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn (I used Bernat Handicrafter)
– 5mm hook (My Furls Streamline Swirl Galaxy Andromeda hook glides beautifully with this yarn)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring Tape

Stitches:
SS- Slip Stitch
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
BLSC – Back Loop Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorials:
Suzette Stitch: One single crochet and double crochet are placed into the same stitch. Skip the next stitch. Repeat. After the last skipped stitch of the row, place 1 SC.

Back Loop Single Crochet (BLSC) –Instead of placing the SC into the two loops at the top of the stitch, place the SC only through the back loop.

Pattern:
Begin by chaining 30.

Row 1:
Into the second CH from your hook, place 1 SC. Continue by placing 1 SC into each CH until the end of the row. CH 1 and turn.

(29 SC stitches)

Rows 2-5:
Into the first stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. Skip the next stitch.
*Into the next stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. Skip the next stitch.*
Repeat from * to * 12 more times.
Place 1 SC into the last stitch. CH 1 and turn.

(15 SC stitches, 14 DC stitches = 29 stitches)

Rows 6-9:
Into the first stitch, place one BLSC.
Continue by placing 1 BLSC into each stitch until the end of the row. CH 1 and turn.

(29 BLSC stitches)

Repeat rows 2-9 two more times ending on row 25.

Rows 26-29:
Into the first stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. Skip the next stitch.
*Into the next stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. Skip the next stitch.*
Repeat from * to * 12 more times.
Place 1 SC into the last stitch. CH 1 and turn for rows 26-28.

After completing row 29 – If you want to add edging, do not CH 1 or turn your work. If you don’t want to add edging, fasten off and weave in ends.

(15 SC stitches, 14 DC stitches = 29 stitches)

If you would like to add edging:
Working into the same space as the last SC from row 29, place two more SC stitches. This will create a corner curve around to the next edge. Evenly place 1 SC around all edges working 3 SC stitches into each corner stitch space. Once you have returned to the beginning of your edging, SS into the first SC you made. Fasten off and weave in ends.
