Free Crochet Pattern – Easy Herringbone Cozy

31Shares

Looking for a sweet summer project? Check out this easy Herringbone cozy…and it’s a free crochet pattern! With only 8 rounds and a simple stitch, you’ll have it finished in no time at all. It’s great for market prep, teacher gifts, or to have stashed in your car. You’ll love the comfortable feel and simple design of this cozy and the stitch definition looks beautiful using Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn. The cotton/nylon mix makes it durable and easy to clean which is always an added bonus.

As of May 12th, 2023, this pattern has received an update to be consistent with the layout and formats of my recent designs. The updated .pdf can also be found in my Etsy and Ravelry shops.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Beginning CH does not count as a stitch
– Special stitch tutorials are included within the pattern
– It might be helpful to place 1 stitch marker in the first HBHDC of round 1. This will help keep the stitch visible and mark where you will SS -to complete the round.
– If you work with a thinner weight yarn (such as a worsted weight cotton), you might prefer to extend beyond round 7 for a wider coverage. Upon reaching your desired size, please complete by continuing with round 8. Please note that not using Bernat Maker Home Dec may result in different yardage amounts.

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 28 yards of Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn
– 5mm hook (I used my Furls Streamline Andromeda)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
HBHDC – Herringbone Half Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HBHDC) – Yarn over and insert hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Pull the top loop on your hook down through the middle loop on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through remaining loops on hook. Detailed Tutorial: Click here

Working Into The 3rd Loop of HBHDC – The 3rd loop is found at the back of the stitch. It is below the traditional “V” shape found at the top of the stitch. Please see the photo below for a visual guide:

Pattern:
Begin with CH 30. SS into the 1st CH to form a loop, being careful not to twist. CH 1.

Round 1:
Into the first stitch and each stitch around, place 1 HBHDC. SS into the top of the beginning HBHDC and CH 1.

(29 HBHDC)

Round 2:
(Work this round into the 3rd loop)
Into the first stitch and each stitch around, place 1 HBHDC. SS into the top of the beginning HBHDC and CH 1.

(29 HBHDC)

Rounds 3-7:
Repeat round 1

Round 8:
Repeat round 2. Instead of CH 1 at the end, fasten off and weave in ends.
