I live in an area with hot and humid summer days. Sometimes crocheting in the middle of summer isn’t always appealing. Blankets or sweaters might feel too big or heavy to work on in 35C heat…so what can you make during those hot and humid months? Here are some ideas!

Projects Ideas for Crocheting in the Summer:
These projects are small, could be placed into the “stash buster” category and make great options for market prep or gift giving. Summer is a great time to work on small projects to fill your tables during the fall and holiday winter markets. They’re also fantastic for gift giving, especially with teachers, neighbours and co-workers. Make them in the summer and set them aside for later, either to sell or gift.
- Washcloths are a great option because they are small, they work up quickly and are a fun way to try new stitches
- Coasters and mug rugs: not just for beverages but they can also be used under plant pots or other decorative items to protect table top surfaces
- Cup and mug cozies
- Scarves and neck warmers: hear me out….I know they are winter themed but if you make them with a sock weight, DK or worsted yarn, crocheting them is much more manageable than with a bulky weight. They also work up fairly fast and if you pair them with something like some hot chocolate, they make such a sweet teacher gift for Christmas
- Pouches and bags: things like cases for your hooks or sunglasses, dice bags, drawstring pouches for treats, small cross-body bags, gift card holders
- Baskets and plant pot cozies: little baskets for desk organization or to help keep your crafty notions together are always useful projects. Plant pot cozies are cute because they can be easily customized and then placed over a store bought plant pot and suddenly, you have a handmade gift!
- Mandalas: such fun stash busters that have a relaxing vibe and are commonly made using a lightweight yarn
- Face scrubbies
- Bookmarks
- Jewelry: crochet bracelets and necklaces would be such a cute addition to summer or festival outfits
- Tote bags
- Headbands/ear warmers: if you’re staying away from bulky weight yarns in the summer, a lightweight ear warmer can work up very nicely in worsted
- Bows and appliques: these are perfect for adding to store bought headbands, or attaching to other projects as a fun accent
- Hats
- Christmas ornaments or other holiday/celebration items: I know…the last thing you might want to think about is Christmas while sitting in the sun in July. But crocheting little baubles and ornaments in the summer can help manage the rushed feeling during November and December for holiday markets and gift making. Hot tip: it’s a lot easier to find christmas colours in yarn during the summer than during the holiday season
- Placemats
- Pumpkins
- Granny squares or hexies: use the hotter months to make all the pieces and stitch them together in the fall for a cozy blanket
Small projects like the ones mentioned above are perfect for taking with you on summer road trips, beach days, camping adventures….you name it! Small and portable are perfect for hot days and summer travels.
