Ready to begin the pattern? Let’s go!

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Gauge is 4×4 inches using EXT/SC = 12 rows with 14 stitches in each
– Finished size with edging measures approximately 17 inches x 12 inches
– Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern
– Turning CH 3 that begins the DC cluster rows counts as “1 DC, CH 1” (rows 2 and 34)
– Special stitch tutorials are included within the pattern
– Stitch placement photo for rows 2 and 34 can be found within the pattern
– Please use your preferred method of colour changing, ensuring that stitch counts remain the same

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 213 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. I used Dishie Cotton in “Swan” and “Ash”. Approximately 32 yards for Colour A. Approximately 181 yards for Colour B (for one placemat)
– 4mm hook (I used my Furls Streamline Teak. I love, love, love this hook!)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape

Stitches:
SK – Skip stitch
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
EXT/SC – Extended Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Clusters – For this pattern, a “cluster” refers to the block of 3 DC stitches that are grouped together and mentioned in the stitch count notes at the end of rows 2 and 34.

Extended Single Crochet (EXT/SC)– Insert your hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull back through the stitch (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull your hook down through the top loop on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull down through two loops on hook. Extended single crochet stitch complete.

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, CH 59 and begin row one in the second CH from your hook.

Row 1:
Place 1 SC into each stitch across the row. CH 3 and turn.

(58 SC stitches)

Row 2:
(CH 3 counts as the first stitch in this row. It represents 1 DC, CH 1. For stitch placement, please see photo below)

Skip the 2^nd and 3^rd stitch (remember the first stitch looks empty but it’s your CH 3 representing 1 DC, CH 1). Into the 4^th stitch, *place 3 DC and CH 1. SK the next 2 stitches*. Repeat from * to * 17 more times. There should be 3 stitches remaining. Skip 2 stitches and place 1 DC into the last stitch. CH 1 and turn.

(2 DC stitches [one on each end], 18 DC clusters, 19 CH 1 spaces)

Row 3:
(Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch) Into the first CH 1 space make 2 SC. Place 1 SC into each of the next 3 DC stitches. *SK the next CH space and place 1 SC into each of the next 3 DC stitches.* Repeat from * to * until the end of the row. In the last CH 1 space, place 2 SC. Fasten off.

(58 SC stitches)

Rows 4-32: (Begin row 4 by using your preferred method to join yarn colour B into the first stitch of the row. Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch throughout this section)

Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 EXT/SC. CH 1 and turn. After completing row 32, do not CH 1 and turn. Please fasten off instead.

(58 EXT/SC stitches)

Rows 33-35: (Begin row 33 using your preferred method to join yarn colour A)
Repeat rows 1-3. After completing row 35, fasten off. If you are not going to continue with edging, weave in all ends.

Edging (Optional):
When adding edging in a contrasting colour, I like to join the yarn and begin in the middle of an edge. I find it makes a neater transition than beginning in a corner space. I also recommend ensuring your SC edging matches up with your DC cluster rows to be all facing the “right side” (front of the stitches face up).

Using your preferred method, join yarn colour B into any SC stitch and CH 1. Evenly place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around each side. Into each corner space, place 3 SC to create a curve around to the next edge. Once you get back to the beginning, SS into your first SC stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.
