The suzette stitch makes another appearance on my blog in this new crochet washcloth design. It’s definitely one of my favourite stitches and with the beautiful texture and dense appearance, you can see why it’s a great choice for projects like washcloths.
The simple ridges in the middle are eye catching and create a nice break in the repetitiveness of the suzette stitch. This washcloth works up quickly and has a simple edging to provide a neat and tidy finish. Learn more about this design and find the free pattern below…

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is 2×2 inches containing 6 rows of 9 HDC stitches
– Finished washcloth measures approximately 10 inches x 10 inches
– Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch

Materials Needed:
– Approximately 119 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. I used WeCrochet Dishie. Colourways seen in photos are “Inlet” and “Lilac Mist”
– 4mm hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SK – Skip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
Special Stitch Tutorial:
Suzette Stitch – One SC and one DC are placed into the same stitch. Skip the next stitch. Repeat. After the last skipped stitch of the row, place 1 SC in the final stitch. Detailed walkthrough: Click here
Pattern:
CH 38
Row 1:
Into the second CH from your hook and each stitch across, place 1 SC. CH 1 and turn.
(37 SC stitches)
Rows 2-13:
Into the first stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. SK the next stitch. *Into the next stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. SK the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * 16 more times. Place 1 SC into the last stitch. CH 1 and turn.
(19 SC stitches, 18 DC stitches = 37 stitches
Rows 14-18:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across the row, place 1 HDC. CH 1 and turn.
(37 HDC stitches)
Rows 19-30:
Repeat rows 2-13
Row 31:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 SC. Fasten off and weave in ends
(37 SC stitches)
Border:
(I find fastening off and re-joining the yarn in the middle of an edge provides a neater finish for the border)
Join yarn into the middle of any edge with a SS and CH 1. Evenly place 1 SC around all edges and make 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into each corner space. SS into the beginning SC, fasten off and weave in all ends.
