I recently purchased a blocking board and it ended up being a great addition to my crochet tools. I was managing okay without it but it definitely adds a level of convenience when I need to block my small projects.

What’s a Blocking Board?

A blocking board is a tool that can help elevate your crochet and knit projects by enhancing aspects of the pieces. Typically, a blocking board is a foam or wood square that has pegs or has the ability to hold pins and can help in shaping your crochet and knit projects. Here are some things a blocking board can help with:

  • Making square and hexagon motifs with perfect, straight edges
  • It can help to even out stitches and tension, allowing things like post stitches, crossed stitches and bobbles to display more evenly
  • If using a board with pegs, the peg holes allow you to place pegs where they need to be to suit your project (not just for squares!). A foam blocking board might have only pins but the purpose and use remains the same as a wooden board
  • It can help to tidy up the overall appearance of your finished project, giving it a professional look which can help if you are gifting or selling your projects

Blocking Board Review

I purchased this particular blocking board from WeCrochet. I didn’t have one and had been using my ironing board with pins to help shape my squares. I was interested in trying something that would save me a bit of time and be more convenient than dragging my ironing board out every time.

Listed as a small size, this board is perfect for the type of projects I make often which are squares and hexies! This 6×6 inch blocking board is made of a pretty, light coloured wood and can comfortably fit a square that is approximately 5 inches.

The holes are a good distance apart which allows for lots of options to place pegs in a way that best suits the need of your square or motif. There are 12 stainless steel pegs included and each peg is about 3 inches long. This is a really great note because you can then stack your squares easily and block a whole bunch at a time! The pegs fit nice and securely into each peg hole so there’s no room for wiggling or falling out. The pegs are kept together in a small drawstring cloth bag and the board comes with a small block to mount the board in if you’d like to stand it upright (helpful for photos!)

I’ve been using this board for a little while now and have been pleased with it and the results. As I finish a square, I place it on the blocking board and the pegs work their magic to straighten everything out. It’s very straightforward and effective. The odd time where I might have a particularly stubborn square, I will give it a very light misting of water before placing on the board and it sets and dries beautifully. Typically though, I place the squares onto the board dry with good results.

The back of the board has a simple etching of the WeCrochet brand logo and is overall, a really lovely product. One thing I would like to see however is the addition of a thin, cloth bag to protect the board itself and also keep the bag of pegs with it. It would just add a nice finished touch to keep all the pieces together and protect the wood from any dents or knicks that can happen with storage.

At the time of writing this review, WeCrochet has this blocking board in stock and available for $29.99 USD. If you are a knitter and prefer to shop on a website that has a focus on knitting products, KnitPicks (the WeCrochet sister site) also has it available for the same price.

If you haven’t used a blocking board or if you are like me and previously used another method to give a more professional look to your projects, I would say this product is worth considering. It’s convenient, well-made and is a helpful tool to have on hand.
