Crochet Christmas Ornament: Festive Holiday Bauble – Free Pattern

33Shares

It’s just about mid December and festive crochet projects are well under way. My house has exploded with the bright, traditional colors of Christmas and I love it so much.

December is a busy month for a lot of people so I designed this crochet pattern to be quick and easy for when you need a few minutes of yarn time. It makes a great gift idea (and easy to package up to send in the mail) or to simply hang on your tree. Continue on below to find out all the details to make the Festive Holiday Bauble:

As of October 13th, 2022, this pattern has received a refreshing update to reflect the current layout and format of my recent designs. Changes include new photos and extra details in the notes and materials section.

This pattern is available for free here on my blog. An ad-free, neatly formatted, printer friendly version is also available in my Etsy and Ravelry shops. Click the buttons below to take you there!

You may sell items completed from this pattern but please provide credit back to Sweet Bee Crochet and if possible, link back to the pattern location. You may not sell this written pattern or use my photos without consent. You may not use my photos to sell your completed items.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Completed ornament measures approx. 3 inches in diameter
– Beginning CH of each around counts as one stitch
– Special stitch tutorial is included within the pattern
– If you crochet with a tighter tension, you might find it helpful to use a 5mm hook. Both 4mm and 5mm result in very similar finished results

Materials Needed:
– Approximately 19-20 yards total of worsted weight yarn in two colours referred to as “colour A” and “colour B” I used Bernat Handicrafter Cotton
– 4mm hook or 5mm hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
FPTC – Front Post Triple Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Front Post Triple Crochet (FPTC) – Yarn over twice. Insert your hook from the front of the round between stitch posts. Work your hook behind the post of next stitch and back out the other side of the post (towards you). Yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook. Yarn over, pull through last 2 remaining loops on hook.

Pattern (make 2 circles):
With yarn colour A, begin with a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the first CH to form a loop.

Round 1:
CH 3 (represents 1 DC). Place 9 DC into your circle. SS into the top of your beginning CH 3 Fasten off.

(10 DC stitches)

Round 2:
With yarn colour B, join yarn with a SS in between any two DC stitches and CH 4 (represents 1 DC, CH 1). Into that same space, place 1 more DC. Continue by placing 1 DC, CH 1, 1 DC into each space between DC stitches from round 1. SS into the 3rd CH from your beginning CH 4. Fasten off.

(10 CH 1 spaces, 20 DC stitches)

Round 3: (see photo A for reference)
With yarn colour A, join yarn with a SS into any CH 1 space from round 2. CH 1 (represents 1 SC). Place 1 SC into the same space. *Place 1 FPTC around the next DC stitch from round 1. In the next CH 1 space, place 2 SC*. Repeat from * to * 8 more times. Make one FPDC around the last DC stitch from round 1 and SS into the top of your beginning CH 1. Fasten off.

(20 SC stitches, 10 FPDC stitches)

Round 4:
With yarn colour B, join yarn with a SS into the top of any stitch and CH 1 (represents 1 SC). Place 1 SC into each stitch around. SS into the top of the beginning CH 1. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

(30 SC stitches)

Edging/Seaming:
Place your two circles together with the right sides facing out. You will be working through the top stitches of both circles. Attach yarn colour B into top of any stitch with a SS and CH 1 (represents 1 SS). Place 1 SS into each stitch around (making sure to grab the tops of both circles). Fasten off and weave in all ends.

(30 SS)

Chain/Ribbon To Hang:
With either yarn colour A or B, join yarn with a SS into any stitch from the edging. Crochet a chain to the length of your preference and SS into the same stitch you started your CH in. Fasten off and weave in ends. You might choose to use decorative ribbon instead. Please sew your ribbon into the top of any stitch. Fasten off and weave remaining ends.
