Today I’m going to show you how to make a classic Christmas wreath ornament. By crocheting two “curly cue’s” and twisting them around each other, it makes a fun effect that creates a wreath when the ends are joined together. Like the granny square, this style of ornament has been around for a very long time with different variations and tutorials.
You only need to know how to chain and make the half double crochet stitch so this is a fairly beginner friendly project. These wreaths are a cute addition to your holiday tree or even as an accent when attached to a gift bag. Learn how to crochet this classic ornament below…

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– The finished wreath measures approximately 3 inches in diameter
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– You will begin to see your work start to naturally curl very quickly. It’s normal for it to twist as you add stitches down the row. After fastening off, it’s very simple to untwist or wind it into a natural curl shape
– If you have a naturally tight tension, it might be beneficial to go up a hook size when crocheting the chain
Materials Needed:
– Worsted weight yarn in 3 colours. I used WeCrochet Wool of the Andes (approx. 9 yards for colour A “Red”, 9 yards for colour B “Grass”, 1 ½ yards for colour C “White”)
– 4mm hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
Stitches:
CH – Chain
HDC – Double Crochet

Pattern:
Using the instructions below, make 2 curls, one in colour A and one in colour B.
CH 35
Row 1:
Into the 3rd CH from your hook, place 3 HDC (the 2 CH stitches we skipped will count as 1 HDC, making 4 total). Into the next stitch and each stitch across the row, place 4 HDC stitches. Fasten off.
(132 HDC stitches)

Assembly:
Line up the curls so that the tails from both are on the same end. Begin wrapping the curls around each other so they naturally fit together to make the appearance of one curl with alternating colours. It might take a bit of patience to make sure nothing gets twisted but the curls should be easy to manipulate into a nicely finished look.

Join the ends together to make a circle, fastening them securely together. There are many different ways to do this (fabric glue, seaming with the yarn tails, using a SS, etc). I simply used the yarn tails already attached and joined the ends with a yarn needle before fastening off and weaving in the ends. If it looks a little untidy, that’s okay. It can be covered with a bow!

Bow:
To crochet a bow, use colour C and CH 50. Fasten off and weave in the ends. You could also make a bow with some ribbon if you prefer. Attach to the wreath using fabric glue or by sewing.
Add some yarn or another piece of ribbon to the top to turn your wreath into an ornament.
