How to Crochet the Moss Stitch

20Shares

The moss stitch (also known as the linen stitch and granite stitch) is a simple and repetitive pattern that is a great for beginners looking for a simple project. Depending on the yarn and hook used, it can work up to be fairly dense without the appearance of holes or gaps while still maintaining a flexible drape. For this reason, it is a common stitch for washcloths, scarfs and blankets.

Are you ready to learn how the moss stitch? Let’s get started:

Materials Needed:
– Worsted weight cotton or acrylic yarn (I used WeCrochet Dishie)
– 4mm or 5mm hook (I used the hook from my Dots set)
Yarn needle
Scissors

Tutorial Notes:
– This tutorial is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– This stitch is worked by making any even number of CH stitches
– Turning CH 2 counts as a stitch throughout
– From row 2 and beyond, this stitch is made by placing the SC into the CH 1 spaces
– This stitch looks great in one colour and displays the texture beautifully. If you want to alternate colours, it can create a beautiful effect with the way the stitches are placed
– There can be many different versions of the same stitch depending on the pattern or designer. This tutorial simply outlines the method I like to use when crocheting the moss stitch
– We will be making a small swatch for this tutorial. If you would like to practice this stitch later on or use it in a project, please adjust your CH length using the appropriate number to create the size you need
– Sometimes, the beginning CH and first row can look a little loose or uneven. This often fixes itself as your project grows
– If you find your finished project a little uneven on the edges, that’s normal! A simple stretch and pull should even things out but you might consider doing a quick blocking session for best results

Terms:
CH – Chain
SK – SK stitch
SC – Single Crochet

Tutorial:
For this small swatch, CH 28

Row 1:
Into the 4th CH from your hook, make 1 SC, CH 1 and SK 1 stitch. *Place 1 SC, CH 1 and SK 1 stitch.* Repeat from * to * across the row 10 more times. Into the last stitch, make 1 SC, CH 2 and turn.

Row 2:
(You will be skipping over the SC stitches and working only into the CH 1 spaces)

Into the first CH 1 space, place 1 SC and CH 1. *In the next CH 1 space, make 1 SC and CH 1.* Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Into the last space (between the final SC and the turning CH 2 from the previous row), place 1 SC, CH 2 and turn.

Row 3:
Repeat row 2 until you reach your desired length.

That’s it! Once you reach the length you like, fasten off and weave in your ends. You’ll quickly be able to see the beautiful “V” effect as the single crochet stitches start to pop out within the texture. With this stitch, you can make a scarf or neck warmer for yourself or as a gift! You can use your new skills and stitch knowledge to create cute little washcloths too! It’s the same method of chaining an even number of stitches and repeating the rows until you reach a square shape. You don’t even need to add edging if you don’t want to!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Thanks for stopping by and happy crocheting!
