This might be one of those tips that’s “easier said than done” but let me offer some encouraging thoughts on it. Tossing my leftover yarn or a new skein aside when I’m not using it is definitely a common habit of mine that I have worked hard to break. I have tried to make a point of actually putting yarn away properly and thankfully, I’ve been on a good track with that for awhile now. It’s been a positive change for many reasons:

1. My yarn stays in great condition for longer. The fibers aren’t getting stretched, pulled or snagged. It’s also not getting tangled up with other skeins (we all know how much of a nightmare it can be having to deal with that mess).

2. I try to wind my yarn before use. It allows me to check for imperfections or knots during the manufacturing process and deal with them early before running into a project. Yarn cakes also stack really beautifully in storage bins and shelves. (Check out a previous post I wrote on this topic for some more positives about yarn winding: Tip Tuesday -Yarn Prep)

3. Having organized yarn means I know exactly where to find what I need, when I need it.

4. It’s a great way for me keep track of what it’s in my stash. I can easily see what’s available for my projects and what yarn I might need to purchase for specific patterns in the future.

5. I can manage my yarn based on the space available in my home. Since I don’t have a huge space to store yarn, the small nook I have set up for storage is perfect for me. It’s a simple and small system that works for my needs along with the space available. It’s also saved me a bit of money because I don’t want to overbuy without having a proper place to safely keep all those beauties.

The nice thing about yarn organizing is that everyone has their own method or ways or storing yarn. I’ve seen photos of big bags filled with yarn in basements, large bins stacked in attics, floor to ceiling shelving bursting with beautiful fibers. If a tote beside the sofa is what you have, do whatever works for you!
