Today I’d like to share with you the Bobble Row Cowl. A free crochet pattern that uses only two stitches: bobbles and herringbone half double crochet. If you are not familiar with those stitches, I have included a quick written tutorial to guide you along. I used Red Heart Super Saver Ombre for this cowl and it took approximately 3/4 of the skein. The pattern is very flexible should you want to make it a little long or shorter for your personal preference.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Turning CH does not count as a stitch
– Special stitch tutorials are included within the pattern
– Approximate measurements when seamed and lying flat are 9 ½ wide and 17 inches long

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 327 yards of worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in the “Sea Coral” colourway)
– 6mm hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
HBHDC – Herringbone Half Double Crochet
BO – Bobble Stitch

Special Stitch Tutorials:
Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HBHDC) – Yarn over and insert hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Pull the top loop on your hook down through the middle loop on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through remaining loops on hook.

Bobble Stitch (BO) – Yarn over and insert hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (3 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (4 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (5 loops now on hook). Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on hook. Do not chain to close the cluster, instead place 1 SC into the next stitch.

Pattern:
CH 30 and begin row one in the second CH from your hook.

Rows 1-3:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across the row, make 1 HBHDC. CH 1 and turn.

(29 HBHDC)

Row 4:
Place 1 SC into the first stitch. In the next stitch, create one BO followed by one SC into the stitch after that. Continue this pattern (SC, BO, SC) until you reach the end of the row. CH 1 and turn.

(15 SC, 14 BO = 29 Stitches)

Repeat rows 1-4, ending on row 84 (bobble row). At this point, the approximate length before seaming should be 34 inches. Fasten off but leave a long tail for seaming (about 21 inches).

Seaming:
Bring your two short ends together so that the bobbles are facing the inside of your project. I like to use the invisible seam for joining (click here for tutorial) the ends but please use your preferred method for seaming. Carefully stitch your beginning CH up against row 84 to connect your cowl ends together. Fasten off, weave in your ends and flip your project back so that bobbles are facing outwards. Your Bobble Row Cowl is complete!
