Double Stranded Sock Weight Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

2K+Shares

This scarf pattern is such a fun and simple project that uses two strands of sock weight yarn. Hand dyed yarn is so beautiful and although sock weight yarn is often associated with knitting, it can work up beautifully in crochet projects too. You don’t even need to use the same colourways to make this scarf since you are combining two strands, there is so much room for colour combinations. For this scarf, I used two of the same colourway because I really loved the shades that were in it and was going for a bold statement piece.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge is rows 1-13 = 4 inches x 6 1/2 inches
– Finished scarf measures approximately 59 inches long and 6 1/2 inches wide
– Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch throughout
– Working with double stranded yarn is fairly straightforward in simple projects like this one. Instead of making your stitches with one strand, you’ll be using two. Crochet as your stitches as you normally would but be mindful to include the extra strand as you work
– If you would like to make a smaller or larger scarf, CH any number of odd stitches. Please note that adjusting the size will change the yardage amount required

Materials Needed:
–  Two hanks of sock weight yarn (#1) (395 yards each is used for this pattern) for a total of 790 yards combined. I used Songbird Yarn & Fibres “Northern Cardinal – Female”
– 5.5mm hook (I used the hook from my cute Dots set)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape
– Stitch marker

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Lemon Peel Stitch – In the first stitch, place 1 SC followed by 1 DC into the next stitch. Repeat across the row, starting with a SC and ending the row with a DC.
Detailed Tutorial: Click here

Pattern:

With both strands of yarn, CH 23

Row 1:
Into the second CH from your hook and each CH across, place 1 SC. CH 1 and turn.

(22 SC stitches)

Rows 2-154:
Into the first stitch, place 1 SC followed by 1 DC in the next stitch. Repeat across the row 11 more times. CH 1 and turn.

(11 SC stitches, 11 DC stitches = 22 stitches)

Row 155:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 SC. Fasten off and weave in ends.

(22 SC stitches)

And voila, your scarf is finished! Isn’t it such a simple project? I love this design because it works up quickly and can end up being such a colourful and unique finished piece. It’s a great way to showcase that special hand dyed yarn you picked up and maybe weren’t sure what to make with it. I hope you enjoyed this pattern. Happy crocheting!
