Happy Vibes Cotton Coaster – Free Crochet Pattern

124Shares

The Happy Vibes Cotton Coaster was originally released on Ravelry back in August 2019. It was definitely time for a refresh to spruce it up! If you are familiar with the old pattern, you’ll notice one difference is the edging. I replaced the crab stitch with a traditional single crochet stitch to make this even more beginner friendly. Find the free pattern below…

This pattern is available for free here on my blog. An ad-free, neatly formatted, printer friendly version is also available in my Etsy shop. Click the button below to take you there!

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– The finished coaster measures approximately 3 ½ inches in diameter
– Gauge is not required for this project
– Beginning CH 2 counts as one DC stitch (rounds 1-3)
– Beginning CH 1 counts as one SC stitch (round 4)
– This is a beginner friendly pattern focusing on the use of the basic stitches and colour simple changes
– This coaster looks cute with alternating colours but also works well using one yarn colour for rounds 1-3 with a simple accent colour for round 4
– Extra photos and full text html links can be found at the end of the pattern

Materials Needed:
– Worsted weight cotton yarn in 3 colours. Approximately 4 ½ yards (colour A), 3 yards (colour B) and 5 yards (colour C). I used WeCrochet/Knit Picks Dishie
– 5mm hook
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring tape

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, begin with a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the first CH to make a loop.

Round 1:
CH 2 (counts as 1 DC) and place 9 DC into the loop. SS into the 2nd CH of the beginning CH 2 and fasten off. This is a good time to tighten up your centre loop.

(10 DC stitches)

Round 2:
Beginning in the top of any stitch, join yarn colour B with a SS and CH 2 (counts as 1 DC). In the same stitch, place 1 DC. Into each stitch around, place 2 DC. SS into the 2nd CH of the beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(20 DC stitches)

Round 3:
Beginning in the top of any stitch, join yarn colour C with a SS and CH 2 (counts as 1 DC). In the same stitch, place 1 DC. Into each stitch around, place 2 DC. SS into the 2nd CH of the beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(40 DC stitches)

Round 4:
Beginning in the top of any stitch, join yarn colour A with a SS, CH 1 (counts as 1 SC). Into each stitch around, place 1 SC. SS into the top of the beginning CH 1. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

(40 SC stitches)

As mentioned in the pattern notes, if you’re looking for something with less colour contrasts, this project works well with just two shades. It’s easy to customize and whatever option you choose, both work up fairly quickly.
