Crocheting on my back deck is something I especially enjoy in the warmer weather. We often get critters and birds roaming through which is always a lovely sight. However, there was one sweet little baby bunny that was hopping around our garden that inspired this design. I enjoyed working on this project and I hope you do too!
A special note: Due to the long bunting chain, please keep this garland out of the reach of small children.
For the best results, I recommend using a worsted or aron weight yarn for this project. My testers used different brands all with wonderful results. Please feel free to use your favourite weight 4 yarn to crochet this pattern. Some yarns used in the testing process were Loops and Threads Impeccable, Lion Brand Homeland and Paintbox Aron. You can see their awesome versions below:
Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Beginning CH of each round does not count as a stitch
– This pattern uses two colours, referred to as “Colour A” and “Colour B”
– Special stitch tutorial is included below
– This pattern is divided into two sections: the bunny and the circle
– Yardage mentioned is only for one fully completed circle with bunny attached. Yardage for the bunting chain is not included as it will vary depending on how may circle motifs you have made.
– Your circle might have a slight curl after completing round 4. Don’t worry! The edging will flatten it out.
– Get creative with colours or by adding tassels and pom pom’s to your bunting!
Due to the long chain, please keep this garland out of the reach of small children.
Materials Needed:
– Approximately 29 yards of worsted weight yarn (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable) for one completed circle with the bunny sewn on.
– 5mm hook or appropriate hook to match your yarn
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
Stitches:
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
SC/PIC – Single Crochet With Picot
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
Special Stitch Tutorial:
Single Crochet With Picot Stitch: Complete 1 SC and then CH 3. SS into the third CH from the hook. SC/PIC stitch complete.
Circle Pattern:
(Yarn Colour A)
Begin with a magic circle. Alternately, you may CH 3 and SS into the first CH to form a loop. CH 2.
Round 1:
Into the circle, place 10 DC. SS into the beginning DC and CH 2.
(10 DC)
Round 2:
Into the first stitch and each stitch around, place 2 DC. SS into the beginning DC. CH 2.
(20 DC)
Round 3:
Into the first stitch, place 1 DC. Into the second stitch, place 2 DC. Repeat this stitch sequence of 1 DC, 2 DC all the way around. SS into the top of your beginning DC. CH 2.
(30 DC stitches)
Round 4:
Into each of the first two stitches, place 1 DC. Into the third stitch, place 2 DC. Repeat this stitch sequence of 1 DC, 1 DC, 2 DC all the way around. SS into the top of your beginning DC. Fasten off and weave in ends.
(40 DC stitches)
Edging:
(Yarn Colour B)
Join yarn into any stitch with a SS. Into the same stitch, place 2 SC. In the next stitch, place 1 SC/PIC. Repeat this sequence of 2 SC, 1 SC/PIC all the way around. Your last stitch should be a SC/PIC. SS into the beginning SC. Fasten off and weave in ends. Circle is complete.
(40 SC, 20 SC/PIC stitches)
Bunny Pattern:
(Yarn Colour B)
Begin with a magic circle. Alternately, you may CH 3 and SS into the first CH to form a loop. CH 1.
Round 1:
Into the circle, place 10 HDC. SS into the beginning HDC and CH 1.
(10 HDC)
Round 2:
Into the first stitch and each stitch around, place 2 HDC. SS into the beginning HDC. Do not CH or fasten off. Continue to the next step to begin the ears.
(20 HDC)
Ears:
CH 7. Into the second CH from your hook, place 1 SC. Into each of the next 4 CH stitches, place 1 HDC. Into the last CH, place 1 SC. SS into the same stitch as your CH (first ear complete). SS over the next two stitches.
CH 7. Into the second CH from your hook, place 1 SC. Into each of the next 4 CH stitches, place 1 HDC. Into the last CH, place 1 SC. SS into the same stitch as your CH (second ear complete). Fasten off and weave in ends. Bunny applique is
complete.
With yarn colour B, stitch your bunny into the centre of the circle. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Bunting Chain:
(Yarn Colour A OR B)
Chain your desired length to appropriately hang your circles evenly apart. Once you have reached the required length, SS into the 2nd CH from your hook and into each CH stitch across the row. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Assembling:
With the matching colour of your chain, use the yarn needle to sew the back of your circles into your chain, evenly spaced apart. I found stitching into the base of a SC/PIC stitch, through next 2 SC and into the base of the next SC/PIC stitch works well. (Repeat for each circle)
