This week Simply Crochet magazine announced the details for Granny Square Day 2020, taking place on August 15th. I’m super excited and have been making plans for colour combos and patterns to crochet. I love the community connection that happens each year when crocheters around the world share photos of their favourite granny square creations. It creates such a happy and positive vibe on my Instagram feed, not to mention the colourful and creative inspiration that comes with it.
If you aren’t familiar with granny square day, it’s a fun and simple event to to participate in. Grab some yarn, a hook and work up your favourite granny square pattern. Snap a photo, post to your Instagram with the appropriate hashtags (#grannysquareday2020 is one for this year) and add your creation to a beautiful display of crochet projects focusing on squares.
You aren’t limited to a classic granny square either! One of the best parts of Granny Square Day is the open ended creativity that goes along with it. Take a quick peak on Instagram using last years hashtag #grannysquareday2019 to see some of the designs and patterns.
Here are some of my contributions from 2019:
It can be especially fun because at the end of the day, you have a selection of squares which you can display around your home or workplace. I took some of my squares and created a little wall hanging piece.
If you’d like to get a head start on your planning for the 2020 event, there are numerous patterns available online. You can find a few of my own free patterns here:
Granny Bobble Wall Hanging is a fun and modern twist on the classic square. Ravelry version found here.
Between The Stitch Square is a simple and fast project with only 6 rounds. Ravelry version found here.
Picot Points Square is a lovely design using up to 4 colours. Ravelry version found here.
How to Make a Granny Square is a tutorial that includes both written and photo walk-throughs if you need a refresher or, want to learn how to crochet a classic granny square.
I’m looking forward to participating again this year and seeing all the beautiful creations submitted by others in the crochet community. I hope you’ll join in the fun and come take a peak at the colourful makes and share the love for all things granny squares.
Happy Crocheting!
Oh I want to do this!!!??????
