We are just a few weeks into January but I’m seeing a lot of talk about Valentine’s Day. I know it’s not until next month but for makers like us, we often like to plan and prepare ahead of time. We like to figure out what to make for upcoming holidays and special celebrations, and gather all the yarn and materials needed for those projects. This is my first pattern release of 2020 and is a great little project for any skill level. It takes about an hour to make and is perfect for handing out to friends or a special someone.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch
– Special stitch tutorial is included within the pattern

– Please be mindful with the handle. Keep this bag out of  the reach of small children.

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 77-78 yards of worsted weight acrylic yarn. You can use one colour or two if you would like to make your edging pop. I used two and will refer to them in the pattern as “colour A” and “colour B”
– 4mm hook (if crocheting a handle) and 5mm hook (for the bag). I really enjoy working with the Radiant hooks from WeCrochet and the Streamline Wood hooks from Furls.
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Measuring Tape
– Ribbon/other material with appropriate needle and thread if you are choosing to not crochet a handle

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
BO– Bobble Stitch

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Bobble Stitch (BO) – Yarn over and insert hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (3 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (4 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (5 loops now on hook). Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on hook. Do not chain to close the cluster, instead place 1 SC into the next stitch. For this pattern, the bobble stitch is worked over two stitches but will be counted as separate stitches (1 stitch = bobble, 2^nd stitch = single crochet to close. The BO and SC will be counted as separate stitches.

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, CH 18 and begin row one in the second CH from your hook.

Rows 1-3:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 SC. CH 1 and turn.
(17 SC stitches)

Row 4:
Place 1 single crochet into the first stitch. Make one bobble into the next stitch. Complete this pattern of “1 bobble, 1 single crochet” until the end of the row, ending with a single crochet. CH 1 and turn.
(8 BO stitches, 9 SC stitches = 17 stitches)

Repeat rows 1-4, 7 more times stopping at row 32:
(8 BO rows, 24 SC rows)

Rows 33-34:
Place 1 SC into each stitch across. CH 1 and turn.
(17 SC stitches)

Row 35:
Place 1 SC into each stitch across. Do not CH 1 or turn. Your rectangle should measure approximately 9 ½ inches x 5 ½ inches. If you are using two colours, fasten off yarn colour A.
(17 SC stitches)

Fold your piece in half so the bobbles are facing out and in a horizontal row. If you are not switching colours, skip to the * in the edging instructions below.

Edging:
With yarn colour B, insert your hook into the top left corner. * Take special care to ensure you are grabbing both the front and back panels of the bag. Place 1 SC evenly around the bag (sides and bottom), leaving the top open. Make 2 SC into the two bottom corners to create a curve around to the next edge. Once you reach the top of the right side of the bag, fasten off and weave in all ends.

Creating The Handle:
You may choose to use ribbon or another material as the handle. Please cut the length desired and use a needle and thread to stitch into inside seams of the top of the bag.

If you would like to crochet a handle:
With yarn colour A, use your 4mm hook to CH 4. Make sure to leave long tails on both ends for attaching to your bag.

Row 1:
Place 1 HDC into the 2^nd CH from your hook and each of the next 2 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
(3 HDC)

Rows 2-34:
Repeat row 1. After completing row 34, fasten off. The handle should measure approximately 12 ½ inches x 1 inch. Stitch the ends of the handle into the inside seams of the top of the bag. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
