Have you worked with the even moss stitch before? It’s a very easy (and beautiful) stitch combination using a mix of slip stitch and half double crochet. Small projects are the perfect way to learn and practice new stitches so today, I’m sharing a free coaster pattern with you! Learn how to crochet the even moss stitch and how to incorporate it into a project.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Turning CH does not count as a stitch
– For the second round of edging, beginning CH 1 counts as a stitch (SC)
– Special stitch tutorial is included within the pattern
– Finished square with edging measures approximately 5×5 inches. Your version may differ slightly depending on yarn and tension

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 23-24 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn for one square. I used Estelle Sudz (19 yards for Colour A, 4 yards for Colour B)
– An appropriate hook to match your yarn choice (4mm-6mm). I used my Furls 4mm Streamline Teak.
– Yarn needle
– Scissors

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Even Moss Stitch –
In the first stitch, place 1 SS. Make 1 HDC into the next stitch. Repeat across the row, always starting and ending with SS.
Detailed Tutorial: Click here

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, CH 14 and begin row one in the second CH from your hook.

Rows 1-13:
Into the first stitch place 1 SS. Into the second stitch, place 1 HDC. Repeat across the row, ending with a SS. CH 1 and turn.
(7 SS, 6 HDC stitches = 13 stitches)

Row 14:
Into the first stitch place 1 SS. Into the second stitch, place 1 HDC. Repeat across the row, ending with a SS. CH 1 but do not turn.
(7 SS, 6 HDC stitches = 13 stitches)

Edging:
Round 1:

Into the same stitch as the last SS, make 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC.  Continue by evenly placing 1 SC around each side. Into each corner space, crochet 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC. SS into the top of your beginning SC. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 2:
Using your preferred method, join yarn colour B into any CH 2 corner space with a SS and CH 3 (counts as 1 SC, CH 2). Place 1 SC into the same corner space. Make 1 SC into each stitch across the edge. In the next corner space, SC, CH 2, SC. Continue around all edges and corners (my squares usually have 16 stitches along each edge of round 2). SS into the beginning CH 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Great job! Your Slanted Loop Coaster is complete! Crochet a set of 4 to create a beautiful gift or to add to your market table!
