How To Crochet a Granny Square Christmas Stocking

449Shares

Granny squares are a classic pattern that can hold a lot of memories and nostalgia for people, especially when combined with Christmas decor. My own granny square Christmas stocking was made by my Nana when I was a baby and I still use it. They can add a beautiful vintage vibe to your celebrations and make great gifts for family and friends. Today I’m sharing a tutorial on how to make your own granny square Christmas stocking. Let’s jump right in…

This pattern received a refreshing update on November 10th, 2022 to fit the current layout and format of my recent designs.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Each square measures approximately 4 x 4 inches
– The finished stocking measures approximately as follows: height 13 inches, heel to toe 11 inches
– The beginning CH 2 of each round in the granny square counts as 1 DC
– The beginning CH 1 of each round in the SC section at the top of the stocking does not count as a stitch
– I created this stocking using the traditional Christmas colours of green, white and red. I have also made this stocking using one single colour and it looks quite lovely too!

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 184-185 yards (total) of worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in 3 shades using the traditional Christmas colours (referred to as “colour A”, “colour B” and “colour C”)
– 5mm hook (I recommend WeCrochet Radiant hooks or Furls Streamline Wood)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Pattern: Crochet 12 granny squares
With yarn colour A, begin with a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the second chain from your hook to form a circle.

Round 1:
Working all into your circle, CH 2 (represents 1 DC), place 2 DC into your circle and CH 2. *Make 3 DC, CH 2*. Repeat from * to * two more times. SS into the top of your beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(12 DC stitches, 4 CH 2 spaces)

Round 2: Attach yarn colour B into any CH 2 space with a SS
Continue working in this space and make CH 2 (represents 1 DC), 2 DC. CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. *In the next CH 2 space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1*. Repeat from * to * two more times. SS into the top of the beginning CH 2. Fasten off.

(24 DC stitches, 4 CH 1 spaces, 4 CH 2 spaces)

Round 3: Attach yarn colour C with a SS into any CH 1 space
In that CH 1 space, CH 2 (represents 1 DC) and make 2 DC, CH 1. *Into the next CH 2 space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. In the next CH 1 space, make 3 DC, CH 1*. Repeat from * to * two more times.

In the last CH 2 space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. SS into the top of the beginning CH 2. Fasten off, weave in all ends.

(36 DC stitches, 8 CH 1 spaces, 4 CH 2 spaces)

Toe of The Stocking: Make 2
It’s important to know that the toe portion of the stocking will be slightly larger than the granny squares. This will help create a nice round finished look (and make the perfect spot for Santa to stash an apple or clementine!).

With yarn colour A, create a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the second chain from your hook to form a loop. CH 2 (represents 1 DC).

Round 1:
Into the circle, place 1 DC and CH 1. *Place 2 DC, CH 1*. Repeat from * to * 5 more times. SS into the top of your beginning CH 2. Fasten off and weave in ends.

(14 DC stitches, 7 CH 1 spaces)

Round 2:  With yarn colour B
Join yarn into any CH 1 space with a SS and CH 2 (represents 1 DC). Into that same space create 2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1.
Into each of the next 4 CH 1 spaces, place 3 DC, CH 1.
Into the next CH 1 space, create 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1.
Into the next CH 1 space, make 3 DC, CH 1.
SS into the top of your beginning CH 2. Fasten off and weave in ends.

(27 DC stitches, 7 CH 1 spaces, 2 CH 2 spaces)

Round 3: With yarn colour C
Position your work so that the two “3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC” sections are on the right. Join yarn into the CH 2 space at the top right and CH 2 (represent 1 DC). Into that same space, create 2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1.
Into each of the next 5 CH 1 spaces, make: 3 DC, CH 1.
Into the next CH 2 space, create 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1.
Into each of the next 2 CH 1 spaces, make: 3 DC, CH 1.
Slip stitch into the top of your beginning CH 2. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

(33 DC stitches, 9 CH 1 spaces, 2 CH 2 spaces)

Assembling Your Stocking:
Arrange your squares into two stocking shapes as seen in the photo below. Make sure that your squares are all facing with the right side up. You will be seaming your squares to create two separate panels, the front and the back. Please use the seaming method that you are most comfortable with. I like using an invisible seam: Invisible Seam Tutorial

I would recommend using the colour from round 3 for seaming to achieve a neat and tidy appearance.

When joining the toe piece to the side of the square at the bottom, you will need to grab a few extra stitches together when sewing your seam. Remember that the toe piece is slightly bigger and scooping up a few extra stitches will help to pull it to match the size of the square beside it. It will pucker a little but will fix itself when the front and back panels of the stocking are sewn together.

Once the front and the back panels are finished, place them together with the right sides facing in, towards each other. Using yarn colour C, begin seaming your edges from the top, down to the bottom and back up around. Fasten off and weave in your ends. Adjust your stocking so that it is no longer inside out and gently pull your stocking into shape.

Top of the Stocking:
With yarn colour C, join to any stitch at the top and CH 1. Place 1 SC evenly around the top of the stocking, both front and back panels. This will help to tidy up the edge. Once you get back to the beginning, SS into the first SC of the round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Using yarn colour A or B, join to any single crochet stitch at the top of your stocking with a SS and CH 1. Place 1 SC into each stitch around, SS into the top of the beginning SC. CH 1 and repeat another round of SC stitches. You can choose to make this top as tall as you’d like. I made mine to measure approximately 2 ½ inches. When you are happy with the number of SC rows, fasten off and weave in ends.

Hanging Loop:
With the yarn that you used for the top brim, CH 4. Place 1 SC into the second chain from your hook and into each of the next two stitches. CH 1 and turn. Repeat rows of 3 SC stitches until you reach 7 ½ inches in length. Fasten off and attach to your stocking by stitching or sewing each end of the loop into one side of the brim.

Other Loop Ideas:
– Create a long chain instead of rows. Attach to the inside of your stocking to allow for easy tying to railings or hooks
– Use a piece of ribbon or fabric for a decorative appearance

Great job! Your Granny Square Christmas Stocking is complete! A classic crochet project that’s perfect for a vintage inspired holiday. Because I was giving this pattern a refresh, I felt that it was important to run it through the testing process again. Check out the amazing version that my testers crocheted:
