Tip Tuesday – Yarn Labels

It can be really easy to misplace or accidently discard yarn labels. If they are ever needed again to look back at for reference, not having them can be problematic. I have two simple ideas on ways to help keep your yarn labels from getting lost and I’d like to share them with you today.

Sometimes we only need a partial skein for a project. Sometimes people like to prepare their yarn before working with it. Sometimes the labels rip and just fall off. There are so many reasons as to how a label could get misplaced or lost and if we need to reference any information on that label later, not having it handy can be frustrating. Dye lots, colourway names, yardage and care instructions are all things that we might need to look for and having the labels accessible and stored with the yarn is extremely helpful in the long run.

If you like to make your full or partial skeins into yarn cakes with a winder: simply remove the label, fold it up and tuck it into the centre of the cake after winding. If you push it in enough, you’ll still be able to stack your yarn cakes neatly for storage and your label will be nice and secure inside.

If you prefer winding your yarn into a ball: Remove the label and wind your yarn as you normally would into a ball. Fold the label two or three times and use a single hole punch in the top corner. Attach the label to the end of your yarn tail and secure with a bow or loose knot.

I find these two methods extremely helpful and it helps me store and organize my yarn for later. There is no right or wrong way to this and it really just comes down to personal preference and the amount of yarn you’re working with.
