This pattern has received a little make-over! When I first released this design, I called it The Granny Bobble Wall Hanging. Recently, I updated the design and changed the title to Granny Bobble Square Motif to encourage more creativity! Don’t worry, instructions for the wall hanging are still included but I have also come up with some other fun ways which this square could be used.

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Gauge is not important for this pattern. Finished size is approx. 5×5 inches
– Beginning CH 1 or CH 2 counts as a stitch except where indicated
– Special stitch tutorial is included within the pattern

– “Cluster” refers to the group of 3 DC stitches made in rounds 1-3
– You might find a quick blocking is required to even out the edges after completion

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 32-33 yards of worsted weight yarn in two colours . The blue and yellow square was made with Berroco Comfort. The grey and cream square was made with WeCrochet Dishie cotton
– “colour A” and “colour B” will be used to note colour changes
– 5mm hook (I used my Furls Streamline Ebony)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
BO – Bobble Stitch

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Bobble Stitch – Yarn over and insert hook into stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (3 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (4 loops now on hook). Yarn over and insert hook into same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (5 loops now on hook). Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on hook. Do not CH to close the cluster, instead place 1 SC into the next stitch. Please note that the 1 SC completed after the bobble counts as its own stitch.

Pattern:
With yarn colour A, make a magic circle OR chain 3 and SS into the beginning CH to form a loop. CH 2 (counts as 1 DC in next round).

Round 1:
Into your circle place: 1 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 2, 1 DC. SS into the top of your beginning CH 2 and fasten off.

(4 clusters, 4 CH 2 corner spaces)

Round 2:
Join colour colour B into any CH 2 corner space with a SS and CH 2 (represents 1 DC). Continue in the same corner space by crocheting 1 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. Into the second corner space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. Into the third corner space make 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC, CH 1. Into the fourth corner space, make 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC, CH 1. Make 1 DC into the first corner CH 2 space and SS into the top of your beginning CH 2. Fasten off.

(8 clusters, 4 CH 2 corner spaces, 4 CH 1 spaces)

Round 3:
Join yarn colour A into any CH 1 space with a SS and CH 2 (represents 1 DC) . Place 1 DC into that same space and CH 1. Into the first corner space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. Into the next CH 1 space make 3 DC, CH 1. Into the second corner space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. Into the next CH 1 space, make 3 DC, CH 1.
Into the third corner space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. Into the next CH 1 space, make 3 DC, CH 1. Into the fourth corner space, make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC, CH 1. Make 1 DC into the next CH 1 space and SS into the top of your beginning CH 2 to complete this cluster. Fasten off.

(12 clusters, 4 CH 2 corner spaces, 6 CH 1 spaces)

Round 4:
Join yarn colour B into any DC stitch and CH 1 (counts as 1 SC). Place 1 SC into each stitch and CH space around the square taking note to:
– Place 3 SC into each CH 2 corner space
– Place 1 SC into each CH 1 space and each DC stitch
SS into the top of your beginning CH 1 but do not fasten off.

(56 SC stitches)

Round 5:
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch for this round) and turn your square around so the back is facing you. This will make your bobbles pop out on the right side of your square. Bobble stitches will be worked into stitches above CH spaces only. Into the same stitch as your CH 1, place 1 SC. Continue placing 1 SC into each stitch around taking note to:
– Place 1 BO into each SC from round 4 that that was made in the CH 1 space.
– Place 1 BO into each corner stitch (the middle SC of your 3 SC stitches from round 4).
SS into the top of your beginning SC. Turn your square around so the front (bobble side) is once again facing you. Do not fasten off.

(12 BO stitches, 44 SC stitches)

Round 6:
Continuing with yarn colour B, CH 1 (counts as 1 SC). Place 1 SC into each stitch around the square. Place 3 SC into the top of each BO stitch that is in each corner.
SS into the top of your beginning CH 1. Fasten off.

Round 7:
Begin in any SC stitch and CH 1 (counts as 1 SC). Place 1 SC into each stitch around. In each corner containing 3 SC, place 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into the 2^nd stitch of that grouping (the middle stitch). SS into the top of your beginning CH 1. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Ideas for Use:

• If you would like to use this motif as a wall hanging, you might choose to add tassels. You can find my tutorial here: How To Make A Tassel. If you’re hanging your Granny Bobble Motif in a diamond shape, attach your tassel on the bottom point. If you’re hanging it as a square, place one tassel on each bottom corner. To hang my Granny Bobble, I used a small branch that I found in my backyard after a wind storm. You can use something similar or use a dowel for a more minimalist appearance. Personalize to match your décor and personality! I attached my square by weaving a long piece of yarn in and out of the square/branch. You may have another method, which is great too!
• Make a few squares and seam them together to make a throw pillow or market bag
• You could even use these motifs as coasters! Because the bobbles sit closer to the edge, there is enough room to rest a mug within the middle. Don’t forget to swap out acrylic yarn for cotton!
