Decorative Crochet Hanger – Free Pattern

1.3K+Shares

Hello crocheters! It’s the beginning of a new year. That means new inspiration, new ideas and new patterns. I’d like to share with you my first pattern release of 2021, a sweet little decorative crochet hanger. It has a variety of uses from cradling small plants to helping you organize your work space. You can make 2-3 of these hangers with one small skein of Bernat Handicrafter cotton (50 grams/73m) and they each work up in about 30 minutes. Find the free pattern below…

You may sell items completed from this pattern but please provide credit back to Sweet Bee Crochet and if possible, link back to pattern location. You may not sell this written pattern or use my photos without consent. You may not use my photos to sell your completed items.

I would love see your own creative spin on colours and how you’ve made it unique. Tag me on Instagram (@sweet_bee_crochet) to show off your finished piece!

Notes:
– This pattern uses a granny square. If you are not familiar with how to make one or need a refresher, a tutorial link is below under Special Stitch Tutorials.
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Beginning ch 2 counts as a DC stitch.
– A “cluster” refers to a set of 3 DC within a CH space.
– Due to the long chain and possible use of small items, please keep the
decorative hanger out of the reach of small children.

– 5mm hook

Fasten off. Because this square will be acting as a hanger, I like to add some extra knots for security before weaving in.

Into one corner space, attach your yarn with a SS and CH 25. Fasten off leaving a long tail, approximately 12 inches on the chain. Repeat for the other 3 corners. Before weaving in ends at your slip stitch, it would be beneficial to add a few knots for security.

At this point, if you would like to add some beads for accent, you can thread them on now to rest above each chain.

Making sure the wrong side of your square is facing up (this will be the inside), gather your four chains together. Ensure they are all even so that whatever jar your place inside will remain balanced. Create a loop and fasten with a knot. Separate your strands into pairs wrapping them around your knot once or twice and secure again with another knot and pull tight. Trim the ends.

Your decorative crochet hanger is done! All that’s left is to find the perfect sized jar or pot to place inside. Inside of mine, I have a small glass jar that is approximately 3 ½ inches tall and 2 1/5 inches wide. It nestles nicely inside with each corner of the granny square resting on each side.

Use this hanger to propagate some plants in the window or hang it on the wall in your work area to hold crochet hooks, pencils, or other small accessories.

I hope you enjoyed this pattern! If you are looking for more fun and simple crochet projects, please check out the “Free Patterns” section of my blog. You can also find me on Ravelry for free .pdf versions for easy printing.

Happy crocheting!
