Textured Back Loop Washcloth – Crochet Pattern

97Shares

The back loop single crochet is a beautifully simple stitch. It adds texture with an easy adjustment of stitch placement and creates an appealing design within projects. It works perfectly for washcloths because it’s fast, easy and adds a bit of scrub action with the texture. Today I’m sharing the Textured Back Loop Washcloth and you can find all the details below:

As of February 26th, 2024 this pattern is now available for free here on my website! This fun and simple washcloth pattern uses the basic stitches to create an eye catching and textured project that works wonderfully as a washcloth. My pattern testers said they found this project fun and relaxing and shared a lot of positive feedback with me. It’s always a great feeling knowing that your work is enjoyed by others.

Let’s make the Textured Back Loop Washcloth…

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– Gauge (4 inches x 4 inches = 16 rows of SC containing 16 SC stitches)
– Turning chain does not count as a stitch throughout
– Finished washcloth with edging measures approximately 9×9 inches
– I prefer CH 1 as a turning CH during the DC rows because I find it helps to keep the edges even. If you would prefer to CH 2 as per the traditional method, please feel free
– It is important to keep an even tension as the BLSC stitches can often pull inward resulting in uneven edges

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 79 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. I used Bernat Handicrafter but other great options are: WeCrochet Dishie, Lily Sugar’n Cream
– 5mm hook (check out these adorable hooks)
Yarn needle
Scissors
Measuring Tape

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SK – Skip next stitch
SC – Single Crochet
BLSC – Back Loop Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
BLDC – Back Loop Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Back Loop Stitches –
Instead of working  into both loops at the top of the stitch, work only into the back loop (the one furthest from you).

Pattern:
Begin by chaining 33.

Row 1:
Into the second CH from your hook and each stitch across, place 1 SC. CH 1 and turn.

(32 SC stitches)

Row 2:
Into each of the first 2 stitches, place 1 DC. CH 1 and SK the next stitch. *In each of the next 2 stitches, place 1 DC. CH 1 and SK the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * 8 more times. Into the each of the last 2 stitches, place 1 DC. CH 1 and turn.

(22 DC stitches, 10 CH spaces = 32 stitches)

Row 3-29:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 BLSC. CH 1 and turn.

(32 BLSC stitches)

Row 30:
Into each of the first 2 stitches, place 1 BLDC. CH 1 and SK the next stitch. *In each of the next 2 stitches, place 1 BLDC. CH 1 and SK the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * 8 more times. Into the each of the last 2 stitches, place 1 BLDC. CH 1 and turn.

(22 BLDC stitches, 10 CH spaces = 32 stitches)

Row 31:
Working into both loops, place 1 SC into each stitch and CH stitch across the row. Do not CH and turn.

(32 SC stitches)

Edging:
Into the same stitch as the last SC, place 2 more SC.  This will create a corner curve around to the next edge. Evenly place 1 SC around all edges working 3 SC stitches into each corner stitch space. Once you have returned to the beginning of your edging, SS into the 2nd SC of your first corner. Fasten off and weave in ends. Your Textured Back Loop Washcloth is complete!
