Hexie Flower Wall Hanging – Free Crochet Pattern

6Shares

Crochet hexagons are one of my favourite motifs to make. They’re quick, beginner friendly and I love how much you can customize them. Not only that, but they also leave a ton of room for creativity within different types of projects.

This free crochet pattern utilizes 3 different tutorials that can be found on my blog. I have combined them to create a simple project that can be made using your favourite colours of worsted weight yarn. I have included direct links to those tutorials within the pattern so that you can learn more about them at an in-depth level if you’d like.

Let’s jump in and get crocheting! Find the free pattern below…

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– There are no special stitches required for this pattern
– Please refer to pattern notes to describe when beginning chains count as stitches
– This pattern brings together three of my tutorials into a quick and cute project. Links to detailed walkthroughs for those tutorials within the pattern
– Yardage amount does not include portions for hanging and seaming
– The yardage mentioned below is based on the project in the photos made with four hexies. You might choose to make more or less hexies for your wall hanging
– You can get creative with these hexies by adding an alternate colour for the single crochet edging or, you might choose to keep your edging the same colour. Please change colours as you prefer to suit your style.

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet

Pattern (make as many as your require for your project):
With the yarn colour of your choosing, begin by making a magic circle. Alternately, you may chain 3 and slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.

Round 1: (work all stitches into your circle)
CH 2 (counts as first DC) and make 1 DC into your circle. *CH 2 and make 2 DC stitches*. Repeat from * to * 4 more times. CH 2 and SS into the second CH of the beginning CH 2.

(12 DC, 6 CH 2 spaces)

Round 2:
CH 2 (counts as first DC) and place 1 DC into the next stitch. In the next CH 2 space, complete 1 DC, CH 2, 1 DC. *Place 1 DC into each of the next 2 stitches followed by 1 DC, CH 2, 1 DC in the next CH 2 space*. Repeat from * to * 5 more times. SS into the second CH of the beginning CH 2. Fasten off here to change colours for the edging.

(24 DC stitches, 6 CH 2 spaces)

Round 3:
Attach new yarn colour into any DC stitch with a SS and CH 1 (counts as first SC). Into each DC stitch around place, 1 SC. Into each CH 2 space, place 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC. SS into the beginning CH 1 and fasten off. [photo A]

(36 SC stitches, 6 CH 2 spaces)

Teeny Tiny Flowers: (make one for each hexie in the colours of your choosing)
Begin by making a magic circle. Alternately, you may chain 3 and slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.

Round 1: (working all stitches into your circle)
CH 1 (does not count as a stitch) and place *1 SC, CH 4*. Repeat from * to * four more times. SS into the beginning SC and fasten off. Tighten your centre loop and secure before trimming edges, leaving a few extra inches on the tails for sewing onto the hexies. [photo B]

Sew one flower in the centre of each hexie. Fasten off at the back and trim ends.

Seaming Together:
I arranged my four hexies into a line. Use a complimenting colour from the edging (this will help hide the seam), join your hexies together. I like to use the invisible seam (tutorial here) to join my motifs but please use the method you are most comfortable with. Fasten off and weave in any ends. [photo C]

Finishing Touches:
There are many creative ways to hang your hexies. You might choose to attach to a wooden dowel or small stick. You could also attach ribbon or a crochet chain directly to the hexies instead. Adding tassels (tutorial here) or beads for an extra fun pop would look great too! [photo D]
