How to Crochet a Super Bulky Ear Warmer

4Shares

Today I’m sharing a really quick and fun ear warmer pattern that’s super easy to adjust in size. I made one for my tween bee using only about 40 yards of super bulky yarn. Because it’s made with such thick yarn, it not only works up fast but it’s SO cozy!

Notes:
– This pattern is written in US terms (find a stitch conversion chart here)
– The finished ear warmer (after seaming) measures approximately 8 inches long and 3 inches wide (fitting ages 8-12 with head circumference of 21 1/2 inches)
– Gauge is not important for this pattern
– Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch
– This project can be customized to fit a variety of sizes by increasing or decreasing the number of rows. Please note that doing so will change the yardage required
– Super bulky yarn can have a bit of stretch to it and combined with the stitch used, makes for a flexible fabric. It is recommended to crochet the length a tad shorter than the measured head circumference. Once seamed, the ear warmer will stretch and should fit in a comfortable and cozy manner.

Materials Needed:
–  Approximately 40 yards of super bulky yarn. I used WeCrochet Alla Prima in the “Licorice” colourway. Please note that this pattern is to fit a child age 8-12 with a head circumference of 21 1/2 inches. If you would like to make a smaller or larger fitting ear warmer, follow the instructions as written and simply decreasing or increasing the row count.
– 8mm hook (I love my Furls!)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors (these are my favourite)
– Measuring tape (a retractable one is handy)

Stitches:
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
BLSC – Back Loop Single Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:
Back Loop Single Crochet (BLSC) –
When making your single crochet, place your stitch only into the back loop (instead of both as done for the traditional single crochet stitch)

Pattern:
Begin with CH 10

Row 1:
Into the second CH from your hook and each stitch across, place 1 SC. CH 1 and turn.

(9 SC stitches)

Rows 2- 36:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 BLSC. CH 1 and turn for all rows except row 36. After completing row 36, fasten off and leave a long tail for seaming.

(9 BLSC stitches)

Remember, this is simply an estimate and the sizing does not need to be exact. Depending on tension, you might need to add or decease a row to meet the length you need.

Bring your two short ends together and seam using the method of your choosing. I like using an invisible seam and it worked well for this project. After seaming, fasten off and weave in the ends.

Such a simple and easy project to make. I just love the squish and texture that comes with using super bulky yarn. These ear warmers would be fantastic for gifts or adding to your market table. Don’t forget to make one for yourself!
